KHRISTO P. TAKHCHIDI is the Director General of the S.N.Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery State Institution, Intersectional Science & Technology Complex, - Doctor of Medical Sciences (M.D., Ph.D.), Professor, Head of the Chair of Ocular Diseases of the Moscow State Medical Stomatologic University.
K.P.Takhchidi was born in 1953. In 1976 he graduated from the Sverdlovsk State Medical Institute. He worked as an ambulance doctor, assistant, later - assistant professor of the Eye Diseases Chair of the Sverdlovsk Medical Institute, dean of the Therapeutic department.
In 1987 he was appointed the Director of the Sverdlovsk affiliated branch of the Intersectional Research and Technology Complex “Eye Microsurgery”. The IRTC Ural Branch was built and put into operation under his direct leadership. During the period of his work as the chief of the clinic, over 260 thou. operations were performed and about 800 thou. patients received diagnostic - consulting service.
K.P.Takhchidi is the author and elaborator of the concept of the Sverdlovsk Region ophthalmologic service reorganization – which is one of the largest regions of the central Russia. Within this concept a net of diagnostic and rehabilitation centers in the Sverdlovsk and Tyumen regions was created which guarantees the availability of the qualified ophthalmologic aid in the most remote areas.

In January, 2001 K.P.Takhchidi was appointed the Director General of the S.N.Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery State Institution. For the past five years he realized a fundamental reorganization, renewed the material-technical, scientific-research and treatment-production bases. As a result of the above, the Complex strengthened its leading position in the treatment- surgical activity, both in Moscow and in Russia as a whole. The main Complex and 11 branches perform over 50% of highly technological ophthalmic operations in our country. The share of the Complex “Eye Microsurgery” is 30% of the whole ophthalmologic aid in Russia. In the recent years the number of examined and treated socially unprotected patients and children has significantly increased. The volume of operations of the highest category of complicity substantially augmented (61,8%).

K.P.Takhchidi is a high-class surgeon possessing international acknowledgment. The arsenal of his surgical activity comprises all eye pathologies. His specialization is the surgery for the severest contingent of patients with vitreoretinal pathology (retinal detachment and ruptures, diseases of the vitreous body, injury consequences), which earlier as a rule were often but unsuccessfully operated at other clinics.
He, himself, and also with his direct participation, there were worked out and introduced into medical practice over 60 patent innovations referring to modern microsurgical technologies in the sphere of reconstructive surgery of the anterior eye chamber, glaucoma, vitreoretinal surgery, cataract surgery, laser technology etc. K.P.Takhchidi has over 250 scientific-research works, about half of which are published in international scientific publications.
 
K.P.Takhchidi is the full member of Laser Academy of Russia, the full member of the Academy of Practical Medicine, the full member of Medical-technical Academy. He has high authority with the international ophthalmologic society which is testified by the honorable awards, in particular of the European Society of vitreoretinal surgeons ( 2001) and the Hellenic Ophthalmologic Society (2002) for the development of the principally new surgical technologies. In 2006 in Bombay (India) at the VI International Ophthalmologic Congress with the motto: “For prominent innovations in the sphere of surgical treatment of various forms of glaucoma” K.P.Takhchidi received the highest award of the International Academy for Advances in Ophthalmology.
K.P.Takhchidi is a member of: the Hellenic Ophthalmologic Society; the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS); the American Academy of Ophthalmologists (AAO) the German Ophthalmologic Society (DOG) the European Vitreoretinal Society (EVRS)
At the 8-th Congress of Ophthalmologists in Russia in June, 2005 K.P.Takhchidi was elected the Chairman of Ophthalmologists Society of Russia.
 
For active participation in the recovery of children who suffered from the terrorist acts in the town of Beslan, K.P.Takhchidi was awarded the title of the Honored Doctor of the Republic North Osetia –Alania.
On February, 20th, 2006 Michael Fradkov, the Head of the Government of Russia signed the Decree No.96 “On the Awarding of the Prizes of the Government of the Russian Federation in the Field of Science and Technique”. The high Government Award was presented to K.P.Takhchidi “For Scientific substantiation, elaboration and introduction of the artificial photoprojective crystalline lenses with natural spectral characteristics” into ophthalmologic practice.
During the last three years of K.P.Takhchidi’s directorship the Institution received 135 patents for inventions, published 5 monographs and a book on eye diseases for students of medical universities. 7 doctoral and 32 dissertations for the degree of candidate (M.D., Ph.D.) were defended which significantly increases the average annual data on dissertations for the previous years. The number of scientific-practical conferences held in the Institution and its branches are increased four times. Three International conferences are held annually at the Microsurgery State Institution, among them “Fyodorov Memorial Lectures”, in the work of which the ophthalmologists from Russia, CIS countries and foreign countries take part.
K.P.Takhchidi – the Chairman of Dissertation Council of FSI IRTC “Eye Microsurgery”, chief editor of journals “Ophthalmosurgery” and “News in Ophthalmology”, a member of editorial board of journal “Glaucoma”.
On March, 22, 2006, by the Order of the Chief of the Federal Service for supervision in the sphere of public health and social development, K.P.Takhchidi was appointed the Chief Expert for ophthalmology of the Federal service for supervision in the sphere of public health and social development.
