Pediatric Department of the Svyatoslav Fyodorov IRTC “Eye Microsurgery”
In 1983 Pediatric Department was established at the IRTC “Eye Microsurgery” on the basis of the unique surgical experience of ocular diseases treatment in children.
Its task is to render a multiform specialized combined surgical aid for children with various ocular pathologies. Our experience doubtlessly proves that early diagnostics, and timely
started medical and particularly surgical treatment of the eye pathology in children is an effective method providing stable visual functions in future.
Pediatric Department of the Svyatoslav Fyodorov IRTC “Eye Microsurgery” have accumulated the unique experience of the eye diseases in children treatment starting from babies and to 18 years of age. Complete examination at the most modern level allows revealing the real cause of the vision deterioration and administering the treatment necessary for the child.
In children of the younger age the eyes are examined under general anesthesia.
The implantation of artificial lens in children suffering from cataract of various etiologies is the priority trend in the activity of the IRTC “Eye Microsurgery” Pediatric Department. In this area the unique experience was accumulated: over 2000 implantations of intraocular lenses (IOL) were performed in children with traumatic and congenital cataract. From the optics point of view IOL is the most perfect means of the eye correction after cataract extraction. This is especially important in childhood, in the period of the visual analyzer formation. More frequently IOL is implanted in children starting from the age of 3 years.
Thanks to up-to-date technologies used at the Svyatoslav Fyodorov IRTC “Eye Microsurgery” only a timely performed operation with an artificial lens implantation allows not merely to return vision to the majority of children, but in many cases to provide a high visual acuity without glasses.
The S.N.Fyodorov IRTC “Eye Microsurgery” carries out a research work in development of the new methods for cataract treatment and artificial lenses models for children.
In case of corneal opacities and scars as well as congenital corneal dystrophies and leukomas if it is necessary to undergo the corneal transplantation at the Eye Bank of the IRTC “Eye Microsurgery” the donor cornea compatible with the child’s ocular tissue will be selected. A corneal graft rejection probability will be minimized and the operation will quickly provide the restoration of the vision.
The Svyatoslav Fyodorov Clinic has wide relations with the leading ophthalmic clinics of the world, with a possibility to exchange information on the recent achievements of ophthalmic pediatrics.
In case of persistent progressing, and especially congenital myopia, in particular when visiting the doctor late, the child is recommended to undergo a scleroplasty operation.
At the Svyatoslav Fyodorov Clinic a special technique of the operation is developed that distinguishably differs from the analogue procedures performed in the other clinics, and provides a restraint of myopia progressing for the majority of the operated children. Over 2000 successful operations convincingly testify their safety and efficiency.
In case of strabismus a complex of individual training exercises will be selected at the Pediatric Department of the IRTC “Eye Microsurgery” allowing not only to correct the position of the eyes, but also to restore the vision of the worse eye using exercises for coincidence and fusion of the pair objects, which develop the concominant activity of both halves of the visual analyzer.
If necessary the operation aimed at the change of “muscular balance in the eye” will be performed for the child.
Retinal diseases in children demand a special approach consisting of regular courses of special treatment. The lack of necessary aid may lead to the rapid deterioration of the vision, up to a complete blindness of the child. However, the children tolerate with difficulty multiple injections administered in the process of treatment. A specially developed method is used at the IRTC “Eye Microsurgery” for this purpose that allows performing painless injections of the necessary medications 5-6 times a day through a thin catheter. In combination with other measures performed as a complex in the majority of children dystrophic process is stabilized and visual acuity increases.
Many operations performed here are unique. Thanks to them more and more little patients who earlier were doomed to blindness gain an opportunity to see without glasses.
For instance, the application of mitomycin in surgical treatment of secondary glaucoma in children, special drainages and ocular tissues processing with the cytostatics in the zone of operation became a new trend in the world ophthalmology.
During last 16 years over 1000 foreign patients from different countries who suffered from progressing myopia, cataracts of various types, secondary glaucoma and retinal detachment, amblyopia, partial atrophy of the optic nerve were treated at the Pediatric Department together with the Foreign Patients Treatment Center.
The communication with the operated patients that is kept up via e-mail and fax in the subsequent periods testifies to a long maintenance of these functions.
