Vitreoretinal Surgery Department

Vitreoretinal Surgery Department exists at the Svyatoslav Fyodorov SI IRTC “Eye Microsurgery” more than 25 years. The essential trend of the Department’s work is the surgical treatment of the retinal diseases (retina) and vitreous body (corpus vitreum) – the name of the Department originated from those Latin words.
This type of pathology demands a special attention due to its gravity, variety of causes and difficulty in treatment. The retina itself is the photosensitive apparatus of the eye, it is a sort of the “window into the brain”, and any damage to the retina may lead to the irrevocable loss of vision.
The task of the Department is rendering surgical aid to the patients with disease of the vitreous body and with retinal detachment. The doctors possess all the range of surgical interventions for the vitreous body and the retina of the eye. Permanent search of the new methods of treatment, own surgical methods allow to treat the patients with the most severe forms of retinal detachment, which are traditionally considered inoperable in the other medical institutions.
The performed operations are very complicated therefore it is impossible to perform them without corresponding equipment. All the necessary and most up-to-date devices produced by the best firms equip the operating theatre of the Department. The park of technological equipment and also all the necessary set of medications and instruments for these operations are permanently renewed.
Highly qualified doctors of the Department, many years of their experience in combination with the highly technological equipment allow operating at the highest level.
Zakharov Valery Dmitrievich – the Chief of the Department, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, is the author of 200 scientific publications and more and of 40 patents. He created instruments that are widely used in clinical practice.
V.D.Zakharov being a disciple, co-worker and follower of S.N.Fyodorov is the founder of vitreoretinal surgery in Russia. He performed over 15 000 operations.
18 candidate and doctoral dissertations were defended under his supervision. Methods of treatment developed by Professor V.D.Zakharov are introduced in the clinics of Russia, countries of the Commonwealth of the Independent States, UAE, India, Algeria. He performed live surgery in the USA, Yugoslavia, India, Algeria, Laos, Cyprus, was engaged in teaching foreign ophthalmologists modern methods of vitreoretinal surgery. In 2003 Valery Zakharov published a book “Vitreoretinal surgery”.
8 ophthalmic surgeons work at the Department, among them 6 Candidates of Medical Sciences.
Annually over 1800 patients get medical aid at the Department; lots of them come from the foreign countries. It concerns mostly the patients with complicated cases of vitreoretinal pathology. At the Department the majority of patients are operated for the retinal detachment by the traditional methods of episcleral plombage in early non-complicated cases of the disease, as well as by the most up-to-date methods of endovitreal interventions in case of severe development of the disease. Besides we perform surgical treatment of the patients with all the pathology of the vitreous body – from the degenerative vitreous opacities to the consequences of the severe penetrating wounds of the eye, and pathologic states developing in diabetes mellitus.
